Gaffney is currently the Chair in Landscape Archaeology and Geomatics at the University of Birmingham, where he is also the Director of the HP Visual and Spatial Technology Center.  His general interests are in Balkan prehistory and computer applications in archaeology.  Gaffney’s research has included the study of wetland landscapes in Croatia, mapping inundated landscapes of the Southern North Sea, historic landscape characterization in Texas (Fort Hood), as well as internet mapping of the Mundo Maya and the exploration of Stonehenge’s landscape through GIS and virtual representations.  Gaffney’s work extends to the creation of 3D virtual mapping and geophysical survey of unexcavated areas at the city of Cyrene.
