Originally interested primarily on the meaning of landscape in human and cultural geography, Cosgrove’s research has extended to a much broader concern that involves spatial images and representations, and their role in creation and communication of knowledge.  Cosgrove’s work includes landscape transformation; landscape itself; space and performance; and cosmography focused mostly in the 16th and 20th centuries, and early modern periods in Europe.  His theory in Cultural Geography is of value to archaeologists interested in the use of imagery and symbols in shaping imaginary landscapes.
